Core Skills - Novice
At it's AGM in June 2010, Hockey New Brunswick adopted changes to it's initiation and novice programs. Follow the link to the excert of the NB Minor Hockey Council Operations Manual dealing with the initiation and novice programs:

15.13 HNB Initiation Program/Novice Program
a) HNB Initiation Program/Novice Program shall be implemented. This Program is based on a child who starts hockey at 5 years old and spends 4 years in hockey before entering Atom, it shall be implemented by all clubs as follows:
Year 1 (5 years old) Initiation Program 1 = Hockey Canada Initiation Skill Manual
Year 2 (6 years old) Initiation Program 2 = Hockey Canada Initiation Skill Manual
NOTE: Years 1 and 2 allowed a maximum of 20 modified games with a start date of December 15
and will apply to any jamboree modified game structure.
Year 3 (7 years old) Novice 1 = Hockey Canada Novice Skill Manual
(introduction to hockey, coaches on-ice teaching/first half of year:
· Positioning for face-offs
· Goaltending
· Off-sides
· General rules of the game
· No league and no championships
Year 4 (8 years old) Novice 2 = Hockey Canada Novice Skill Manual
· No league and no championships
NOTE: Years 3 and 4
· Hockey games 1/3 game/practice ratio.
· A minimum of 10 modified games and the maximum number of modified or full ice games as outlined by the most current Hockey Canada Long Term Player Development model (including jamborees).
· Modified and full ice games will have a start date of November 15 which will apply to any jamboree modified game structure.
***In all cases, NO ALL-STAR and NO ELITE TEAMS – NO EXCEPTIONS
The criteria for modified games are:
i. Played on an area smaller than full ice – half ice, two thirds ice or one third ice are appropriate options.
ii. Format modified to encourage fun and fair play. Example of this would be not keeping score, more than one puck, more than 6 players on per team.
iii. Use of a light weight puck.
